In September, a formidable team proudly represented Nurun at Google Canada’s first ever mobile Hackathon. The core Front-End Development team (Neil Cohen, Vincent Lee and Walden Wang) took part in this live competition at Google’s Toronto office. The focus of the event was to implement actionable changes on a live, mobile website–specifically focused on mobile speed and optimization.
The challenge was simple but tough: identify, test (using https://testmysite.thinkwithgoogle.com) and then improve an existing website to optimize it for mobile speed…in only one day.
The team applied multiple optimization strategies and development techniques including CSS sprite generation, lazy loading, caching mechanisms, and JS/CSS minification. They reduced the number of requests, optimized images, and significantly decreased the load time, all without sacrificing the look and feel, nor the user experience.
While the initial mobile website performance was good, there was an opportunity to make it better. Loading times and page weights of the mobile site were measured before and after, and showed astonishing results: after applying the improvements, load times were improved by over 75%. The changes made a substantial impact and their efforts dramatically improved the site.
The Google judges agreed. By boosting overall performance 10%, the Nurun team finished in the top 3 from over 20 competing agencies in the GTA.
